John 13:1 Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. V3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God. V4 so he got up from the meal, and washed the disciples feet.
“Jesus knew” means His destiny was in His heart. He knew who He was. He knew His impending torture and death. He knew the disciples would forsake Him. He knew the devil was working his full power.
Jesus knew.
Knowing things changes things.
Knowledge changes you. When someone comments that they do not know how to do something that you know, you likely would say, “Let me show you.” You are in familiar territory. You are comfortable in what you are doing.
The more knowledge we have the better we can deal with our circumstances. The more knowledge we have in any area, the better we predict our outcome. Having knowledge gives power to do what others cannot. Jesus did what He did because He had knowledge of how much good will come.
The Disciples were with Jesus at His last Passover on this earth. The next few days for the disciples would be full of questions. Jesus was giving them answers. This time in a picture of service.
Jesus was the one that served. He washed the feet of his betrayer. He was a day away from His abandonment, torture, and death. How could Jesus be the one giving His life yet supporting the life of His disciples who would desert Him in His darkest hour?
John 13:1 “Jesus knew.”
The question for us is, do we know enough about our faith to be confident? Do we know the truth?
Such knowledge can give assurance that every act of service is producing accomplishments in the Kingdom. Do we know the servant of all becomes the first in the Kingdom? (Mark 9:35) I believe servants get promoted to more significant service – service that God honors. There are “nobodies”, that have great influence, far beyond the chest thumping boisterous bullies.
Does your knowledge bring you to sacrifice? To give? To serve? If it does not, you likely do not believe what Jesus said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.” (Mark 9:35)
